Collagen 101: What Topical Collagen Really Does
Collagen is on the front of about a third of the products in my bathroom right now, and for a while I assumed that meant rubbing it on was topping up the collagen in my skin.
It isn't. And it took me an embarrassing amount of reading to accept that.
Here's the honest version: collagen molecules are far too big to get down to where your own collagen lives. What topical collagen actually does is sit on the surface and hold water, which plumps and smooths and makes skin look bouncier straight away. That's a real effect. It's just a surface one.
The part worth paying for is what the good formulas put alongside the collagen — peptides, which do have research behind them for supporting firmness over months, not minutes.
So I stopped buying things for the word on the front and started checking what else was in there. Three that earned their place:
A peptide serum, for the actual long game
This is the one doing the slow work. Peptides are the ingredient with the evidence behind them, and a serum is where you want them because it goes on before everything else and isn't competing with a heavy cream.
Nothing dramatic happens in week one. That's normal and it's the point.
Where it goes: Straight after cleansing on damp skin, before moisturiser. Every night is easier to remember than some nights, and consistency is most of the benefit.
Shop now →A pad, for the days you won't do steps
Pads exist for the version of you who gets home late and is not going to do a routine. One swipe and you've done a treatment step.
This one pairs collagen with retinol, so it's doing firming and resurfacing at once. Which also means start slowly, two or three nights a week, and see how your skin takes it.
Don't do what I did: I used one every single night straight away and got flaky around my nose within a week. Ease in, and skip it on nights you've used any other acid.
Shop now →A mask, for the before-photos version
A collagen mask is the most immediate of the three. It floods the surface with water-holding ingredients and skin looks smoother and fuller within twenty minutes.
It's not a treatment so much as a very reliable trick. I use one the night before anything where I'll be photographed.
Getting the most from it: Put it on after toner while your face is still damp, leave it on for fifteen to twenty minutes, and press the leftover essence in rather than rinsing.
Shop now →What I'd tell a friend
Don't buy something because the label says collagen. Buy it because there are peptides in there too, and expect the plumping to be immediate and the firming to be slow.
If you only add one thing, make it the serum. The mask is the fun one, but the serum is the one that's still working in three months.

FAQ
It won't replace the collagen your skin makes, but collagen-peptide formulas are excellent humectants that plump and smooth, and peptides help support firmness over time.
Always thinnest to thickest: serum first, then a pad treatment or cream to seal it in.
Yes. Many collagen pads include gentle retinol. Start slowly and pair with a moisturizer if your skin feels sensitive.
