Hyaluronic Acid, Explained: How I Use It on Dry, Thirsty Skin
My office keeps the heater on from October to April, and by about 3pm my cheeks feel like paper. That's what finally made me read the back of my bottles properly, and the same ingredient kept popping up: hyaluronic acid. Sometimes it's listed as sodium hyaluronate, sometimes hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, and it's in toners, mists, masks, basically everywhere.
So this is my hyaluronic acid guide for normal people. What it is, why the labels brag about "5 types" or "8 types", how I layer it so it doesn't backfire, and the toners, mists and masks I actually keep using.
So what is it, and why so many types?
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant. It grabs water and holds onto it, which is why skin looks plumper and feels bouncier right after.
The "types" thing is about molecule size. Bigger molecules stay on top and give you that instant dewy, cushiony feel. Smaller ones (low molecular or hydrolyzed, on the label) are broken into smaller pieces, so brands like to blend a few sizes in one formula instead of betting on one. I don't count them, but a long list of hyaluronic forms in the ingredients usually means the product is built around hydration and not just using it as a buzzword.
The mistake I made for a whole winter
I used to put hyaluronic products on bone-dry skin and stop there. In a heated room that can leave you feeling tighter than before, because there isn't much water around for it to hold. Now I pat it on while my face is still damp from cleansing, add a second layer if I'm feeling dry, and then always seal it with a moisturizer. Damp skin, thin layers, cream on top. That order fixed most of my afternoon tightness.
The toner I go through fastest
If you want to see the "different sizes" idea on an actual label, flip over Torriden DIVE-IN Low Molecular Hyaluronic Acid Toner. It uses five types of hyaluronic acid, and you can spot sodium hyaluronate, hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid and a couple of others right there in the list.
The texture is basically water, which is why I use so much of it. Two or three pats, wait a second, repeat. It's also made without artificial fragrance, so it's the one I hand to anyone who says toners sting.
When my skin is the dry and sensitive kind of annoyed
ISNTREE Hyaluronic Acid Toner is a little thicker, a clear gel-like liquid, and it's made for dehydrated skin that keeps losing moisture. Hyaluronic acid is paired with birch sap here.
I pour it into my palms and press it in right after washing, before anything else. On the mornings my face feels raw from the wind, this is the one I trust.
For the lazy mornings
Some days I'm not pouring anything into my hands. Skinfood Blue Chamomile Hyaluronic Pad is a moisturizing toner pad with 10 layers of hyaluronic acid, plus panthenol and betaine. I wipe it across my face following the skin texture, skip the eye and mouth area, then go straight to moisturizer. It's my two-minute version of the routine above.
The essence that warms up in your hands
YADAH Collagen Hydra First Essence combines collagen with triple hyaluronic acid, with centella in there too. The brand tells you to press it in with your palms and use their warmth, and I like that little moment more than I expected.
I use it as my damp layer at night, then whatever comes next sinks in nicely.
Long flights and heated offices
Mists are how I get that "damp skin" step during the day. Goodal Green Tangerine Vita C Serum Mist has eight types of hyaluronic acid with green tangerine extract and niacinamide, so it's a nice example of hyaluronic acid sitting next to brightening ingredients.
It's a two-layer formula, so shake it first, then spray from about an arm's length and pat. On a long-haul flight last spring I used it maybe five times and then a bit of balm on top, and I landed looking like I'd slept.
Sheet mask Sundays
Innisfree Hyaluronic Acid Active Mask is a soft, thin sheet soaked with 8 kinds of hyaluronic acid, including a low molecular one. Ten to fifteen minutes, then I pat the leftover essence in and put cream on right away. Don't let it all evaporate first, that's the same mistake as dry skin all over again.
And the one I fall asleep in
For the driest nights there's Sungboon Editor Deep Collagen Hyalu-B5 Hydrating Mask. It's soaked in a lot of collagen ampoule, with hyaluronic acid and panthenol for hydration. The instructions say 30 to 40 minutes, and the brand also suggests using it as a sleeping pack.
I put it on during a long bath, peel it off before bed, pat the rest in and add my moisturizer. My face feels a lot less papery the next morning, which in heater season is all I'm asking for.
If you take one thing from this, make it the order: damp skin, hyaluronic layers, moisturizer on top. Which product you use for the middle part matters less. If you want to browse more, our hyaluronic acid collection has everything from toners to masks.
FAQ
It's a humectant, which means it pulls in water and holds onto it. On skin that shows up as a plumper, bouncier, more hydrated feel, especially if your skin tends to feel tight or dehydrated.
They're all forms of the same ingredient family. Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form, and hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid has been broken into smaller pieces. A lot of Korean formulas mix several forms together, which is why you'll see labels mention 5, 8 or even 10 types.
Damp. Pat it onto skin that's still a little wet from cleansing or from your toner, then follow with a moisturizer so the water has something keeping it in.
In general, yes. Hyaluronic acid is a gentle hydrating step, so it's often used alongside brightening ingredients and next to retinoids or exfoliants to keep skin comfortable. If your skin is sensitive, add one new thing at a time.
Not necessarily. Plenty of toners, essences, mists and masks already contain it, so you may already be getting it without adding another step.
