Korean Skincare Routine Order: The Right Steps, Morning & Night

My little sister sent me a photo of her bathroom shelf last month with one line under it: "what order??" Seven bottles, no idea which went first. Fair question. Getting the Korean skincare routine order right matters more than people think, because a cream put on too early just sits on top and blocks everything you add after it.

So here's roughly what I sent back, with the products I'm using morning and night right now.

The one rule

Thinnest to thickest. Wash your face, then the watery stuff (toner), then the slightly thicker stuff (ampoule or serum), then eye cream, then moisturizer. Sunscreen is the last step in the morning and never at night. A sleeping pack is the last step at night and never in the morning. That's basically it. If you want more on why layering works, there's a longer guide to layering skincare.

Cleansing comes before all of it. In the morning I just use a gentle cleanser, at night I make sure sunscreen and makeup are fully off before anything else touches my face.

Morning toner, swiped

Green Tangerine Vita C Toner (300ml) by Goodal at Baerry
Green Tangerine Vita C Toner (300ml)

Mornings I use the Goodal Green Tangerine Vita C Toner on a cotton pad. The swiping part wakes me up before the bus more than coffee does.

It has green tangerine extract for clarity and dark spots, niacinamide for oil and the look of pores, hyaluronic acid for water, and allantoin to keep things calm. The bottle is 300ml, so it lasts ages. If your skin is sensitive, Goodal suggests a quick patch test on your inner arm first, which I'd pass along to anyone.

Night toner, patted

Bifida Biome Ampoule Toner (210ml) by manyo at Baerry

At night I switch to the ma:nyo Bifida Biome Ampoule Toner. It's an ampoule-in-toner with PHA, so it gently clears away dead skin while five types of hyaluronic acid keep it from feeling stripped.

I keep the exfoliating toner for evenings on purpose. Mornings stay simple, and nights get the one step that does a bit more work. Pat it in with your fingers until it's absorbed, then keep going.

Same ampoule, both ends of the day

Atobarrier 365 Hydro Cera-HA Ampoule (30ml) by Aestura at Baerry
Atobarrier 365 Hydro Cera-HA Ampoule (30ml)

This is the only product that shows up in both routines unchanged. The Aestura Atobarrier 365 Hydro Cera-HA Ampoule goes on after toner and before moisturizer, morning and night.

Cera-HA is hyaluronic acid paired with ceramides, and the idea is that the moisture you just put on stays put longer. It's fluid and light, not sticky at all, so it doesn't fight with anything layered on top. I massage it in for a few seconds rather than slapping it on.

Where the eye cream goes (I had it wrong)

Ginseng Procollagen Eye Cream (20ml) by ONEOHOH at Baerry

I used to put eye cream on at the very end, after moisturizer. Wrong spot. It goes after your serum and before the main cream, so it actually reaches the skin.

Mine is the ONEOHOH Ginseng Procollagen Eye Cream, which the brand pitches as a first eye cream for people starting slow-aging care in their twenties. Ginsenosides from ginseng, propolis and collagen, in a lamellar formula that doesn't sit heavy. I tap a tiny bit around my eyes and the corners of my mouth with my ring finger.

Moisturizer, the last thing at night

Nourishing Barrier Cream (50ml) by Barle at Baerry
Nourishing Barrier Cream (50ml)

My office air is bone dry, and by 3pm my cheeks used to feel tight. The Barle Nourishing Barrier Cream is what I use now as the final step at night and before sunscreen in the morning.

It's built on a 5:2:3 ratio of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, with panthenol, a mildly acidic pH, and a lamellar structure that mimics the skin's own lipid layer. It's vegan certified and EWG Green rated. On really dry days I add a second layer on my cheeks only.

Mornings end here

Derma UV365 Vita-C Radiance Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++ (40ml) by Aestura at Baerry

Sunscreen is always the final morning step, over everything. I use the Aestura Derma UV365 Vita-C Radiance Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++, a moisturizing formula made for sensitive skin, with ceramide and a low-irritation vitamin C.

The part I care about: it's been tear-free tested, so it doesn't sting my eyes on my walk to the station when I'm squinting into the sun. Put it on every exposed spot, neck included.

Nights end here

Jacho ODQ Sleeping Pack (100ml) by ONEOHOH at Baerry
Jacho ODQ Sleeping Pack (100ml)

The night version of sunscreen being last is a sleeping pack being last. The ONEOHOH Jacho ODQ Sleeping Pack is a cooling, moisture-rich gel with gromwell root and ODQ for calming stressed skin.

I put a generous layer on after my cream, and it absorbs without much ending up on the pillowcase, which was my main worry. It also works as a plain soothing gel if you want a lighter night.

My sister's shelf is in order now, mostly. If you're starting from scratch and want the bigger picture of each step, this rundown of Korean skincare routine steps covers the basics.

FAQ

What is the correct Korean skincare routine order?

Cleanse, toner, essence, serum or ampoule, moisturizer, and SPF in the morning. At night, the same order applies but SPF is skipped and richer treatments can be used.

Do I need both an essence and a serum?

Not always, but many K-beauty routines use both because essences are lighter and prep the skin, while serums are more concentrated and target specific concerns like brightening or firmness.

Can I skip toner in my routine?

You can, but toner helps re-balance your skin's pH and preps it to absorb the following steps more effectively, so it's worth keeping in for best results.

Should my morning and night routines be different?

The core steps stay the same, but mornings should end with SPF and lighter textures, while nights can include richer creams and stronger active ingredients like retinol alternatives.

How long should I wait between skincare layers?

A minute or two between each step is usually enough to let a product absorb before applying the next layer, especially for toners and essences.
