Glass Skin Routine: The K-Beauty Steps to a Dewy, Poreless Glow
Last winter a woman at work leaned over my desk and asked what I'd done to my face. The real answer was boring. I'd quit the one heavy cream I'd been using for years and started stacking thin, watery layers instead. That swap is most of what a glass skin routine is, at least for me. No filter, no highlighter, just skin with enough water in it to bounce light back.
This is the lineup I'm actually using right now, morning pad to sunscreen, plus one little extra for lips, because a dewy face with flaky lips looks off. If you want the backstory on where the whole idea comes from, I wrote about the Korean glass skin philosophy separately.
The pad I wear while the kettle boils
Monday mornings my face looks like it slept on a suitcase. So the first thing I do after washing is stick one of the STANDARD SEOUL Hydrating V-Fit Dual Jelly Pad on my cheeks, soft jelly side down, and leave it there for about five minutes while I make tea.
Then I fold it in half and use the other side to wipe from the middle of my face outward, and pat in whatever essence is left. Ten kinds of hyaluronic acid, five ceramides, panthenol, glutathione and a cooling complex that feels lovely when you're puffy.
A toner that thinks it's an essence
My bedroom heater runs all night from November on, and by December I get a dry little patch next to my nose. The SELF BEAUTY Dew Potion 3-Layering Fig Essence Toner is what fixed it.
It's thicker than a normal watery toner, closer to an essence, so it clings instead of evaporating. On a bad night I soak a cotton pad with it and just leave it on the flaky spot for a few minutes as a toner pack.
Shake it first (I forgot, twice)
The STANDARD SEOUL Hydrating Bouncy Boost Serum comes as two formulas in one bottle, and you're supposed to shake it so they blend. I skipped that the first two times and wondered why it felt odd. Shake it.
It's my morning serum. Ten types of hyaluronic acid, ceramide, ectoin and deep-sea water, and on drier days I layer it two or three times, letting each pass sink in. Several thin coats beat one thick one.
What changes after dark
At night I swap the morning serum for the APLB Azelaic Acid Peptide Ampoule Serum, one of the newer things on our shelves. It's for refined-looking pores and a firmer feel, with eggplant and tea tree extracts for skin that's been a bit sensitive, sea buckthorn and rice for dullness, and hyaluronic acid and beta-glucan so it still feels hydrating.
After cleansing and toner, a dropper's worth patted in until it's gone. Nothing dramatic, my skin just looks more awake by morning. If you like comparing serums, the serum and treatment collection is a fun rabbit hole.
The milk that does three jobs
The Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Teca Glass Skin Milk is a milky essence that soaks in quickly. It has PHA for smoothing out uneven texture and peptides for elasticity.
I use it three ways. As a normal step after serum. Layered two or three times on lazy days when I skip half my routine. And mixed with a little foundation, a trick a friend showed me before a long-haul flight, which gives a dewy finish instead of that flat matte look.
Sealing it all in
All those watery layers need a lid. The SELF BEAUTY Dew Potion Skin Barrier Fig Moisturizing Cream uses a skin-like mix of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, with three types of hyaluronic acid and NAD/NMN on top.
It's vegan certified and gentle enough for sensitive skin. I spread a thin layer over everything and give it a minute or two before makeup, otherwise foundation pills a little. More cream does not mean more glass.
Sunscreen I don't negotiate with
Glass skin with sun damage underneath isn't glass skin, so SPF is the last step every single morning. The Torriden DIVE IN Watery Sun Serum SPF50+ PA++++ is the one I don't mind reapplying.
It has hyaluronic acid and panthenol, it's vegan verified and reef safe, and it's made with sensitive skin in mind. I dot it on forehead, nose, under the eyes and cheeks, spread, then pat. It came to the beach with me in August and I didn't get that greasy shine by lunch.
And the lips, please
Small thing, big difference. The Skinfood Avocado & Sugar Lip Scrub uses sugar crystals to lift off the flaky bits, with shea butter, avocado oil, beeswax and jojoba so lips don't feel stripped afterward.
I rub a little on a couple of times a week, wipe it off, and suddenly lip balm actually sits right. It lives on my desk now.
None of this works if you do it once and wait. The glow showed up for me after a few weeks of boring consistency, mostly in the mornings when I'd otherwise look tired. If eight steps sounds like a lot, start with the pad and the sunscreen.
FAQ
Most people notice improved hydration and glow within 1-2 weeks of consistent layering, but full barrier repair and tone-evening effects from actives like niacinamide or PDRN typically take 4-8 weeks of daily use.
Cleansing, hydration, moisturizer, and SPF are daily non-negotiables. Treatment serums or ampoules can be used once or twice daily depending on the active and your skin's tolerance - start with once daily.
Yes - glass skin is about hydration, not oil. Lightweight, water-based hyaluronic serums and gel lotions actually help oily skin by reducing compensatory oil production from dehydration.
Essences are typically thinner and focus on hydration and absorption prep, while serums and ampoules are more concentrated and target specific concerns like brightening or firmness. Both matter in the layering order.
UV exposure breaks down collagen and worsens uneven tone and texture - the exact opposite of the smooth, luminous look glass skin is known for. A tone-up sunscreen protects while adding its own soft glow.
