New to K-Beauty? The First Products I'd Actually Buy
My first K-beauty haul was a mess. I bought everything people were talking about, used all of it the same week, and my skin went red and angry and I couldn't tell which bottle did it. So if you're looking at K-beauty for beginners and feeling a little overwhelmed by the 10-step thing, good news: you don't need it.
Here's the short routine I'd build if I were starting over, with the products I'd actually put in my cart first.
The four steps I'd start with
Cleanser, something hydrating after it (a toner), moisturizer, and sunscreen in the morning. That's the base. Once your skin has been fine on those for a few weeks, add one serum for whatever's bugging you most. Pads and masks come last, as treats.
And add things one at a time. I know it's boring. It's also how you figure out what's working.
A cleanser that feels like a little treat
Cleansing is the step people rush, so I like one that's actually nice to use. The Arencia Blue Hyssop Rice Mochi Cleanser is a soft, chewy blue cleanser in a jar, made with blue hyssop for a fresh feel and sea water and chaga mushroom extracts so your face doesn't feel stripped afterward.
It's one of the newer things we got in, and it's the kind of product that makes you look forward to washing your face at night. Which, as a beginner, is half the battle.
A toner you can just swipe and go
The Dr.G R.E.D Blemish Clear Soothing Toner is a big 300ml bottle, which is good because you use it every day. It has a cica blend and African aloe for soothing hydration, a gentle plant-derived AHA to smooth things out, and barrier ingredients to hold moisture in. It's been dermatologically tested on sensitive skin.
Put some on a cotton pad and sweep it over your face, then pat the rest in. Since it has a little AHA, I'd skip it on nights your skin already feels raw.
Your one serum, if you only get one
If I could only add one serum as a beginner, it would be something hydrating and barrier-friendly, not a strong active. The Anua 7 Rice Ceramide Hydrating Barrier Serum has seven rice extracts for moisture and dullness, ceramides and panthenol for the barrier, and 3% niacinamide with zinc for oil.
A few drops, pat it in, morning and night. Anua even says to increase usage gradually, which I appreciate, because that's the rule I wish someone had told me.
A moisturizer that doesn't feel like a mask
Lots of beginners skip moisturizer because they think it'll make them oily. The Real Barrier Extreme Cream Light is a soft cream with seven types of hyaluronic acid and panthenol that sinks in fast with no sticky layer.
The brand's tip is to warm it between your hands and cup your face for a few seconds so it absorbs. It feels a little silly the first time, but it's a nice ten seconds of calm.
Please don't skip this one
If you only do two steps, make it cleanser and sunscreen. The Numbuzin No.9 NAD+ Peptide Dewy Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++ is a lightweight creamy sunscreen with peptides, NAD+ and collagen, and it leaves no white cast.
It has a dewy finish, so it doubles as a nice base if you wear makeup. Reapply when you've been outside for a while, even on cloudy days.
Later, if you want pads
Once the basics feel easy, pads are a fun extra. The Goodal Green Tangerine Vita C Dark Spot Care Pad Alpha is a dual-texture pad soaked in a citrus essence with vitamin C and niacinamide, for dullness and uneven tone.
You can leave one on a dull area for a few minutes like a mini mask, or wipe it across your face. Because it exfoliates, I'd start with a few times a week, not every day.
And a sheet mask for the bad days
Sheet masks are the easiest way to feel like you're doing something nice for your skin. The manyo Galac Niacin Essence Mask is a bamboo sheet with a brightening essence made with fermented ingredients, plus chrysanthemum, licorice and resurrection plant to calm stressed skin.
It comes as a pack of ten, which is perfect for a once-a-week habit. After toner, put it on, scroll your phone, take it off, pat in what's left.
Start with the basics, give it a few weeks, and only then go shopping again. If you want to see what else people keep coming back for, our K-beauty bestsellers are a good place to browse.
FAQ
Start with four: cleanser, a hydrating toner or essence, moisturizer, and sunscreen in the morning. Once your skin is happy with those for a few weeks, add one targeted serum, then extras like toner pads or sheet masks.
No. The 10-step routine is more of a menu than a rulebook. Most people get good results from four or five products they use every day.
Add one product at a time and give it a week or two before adding the next. For anything with acids, start every other day and use a small amount, then build up once your skin has adjusted.
Pads with AHA and BHA exfoliate, so if you're new to them start a couple of times a week and see how your skin feels before using them more often.
Hyerin has always loved shopping—fashion, beauty, and pretty much anything worth adding to cart. Since starting Baerry, that habit has turned into testing dozens of new beauty products that land on the team’s desks in Seoul, plus plenty she buys herself. An ISTJ with a very high bar for what makes the cut, she treats her own face as the testing ground before recommending anything.
