K-Beauty Budget Picks for Students: 8 Things Under $15 I'd Actually Buy
My first semester away from home, I spent a stupid amount on one fancy cream and then had nothing left for, you know, sunscreen. Never again. These days my rule is simple: if it lives in my everyday rotation, it should cost under $15. That's what this list is, my K-beauty budget picks for students (or anyone who checks their bank app before checkout).
It's a mix of skincare and makeup, because a routine is both for most of us. All prices were under $15 when I wrote this, and you can browse the rest in our K-Beauty Under $15 collection.
Start with the boring stuff
If you can only afford two things, make it a cleanser you like and a sunscreen you don't hate. Everything else on this list is a nice extra. I know a tinted lip is more fun to buy. I still buy the sunscreen first.
The sunscreen that survived my 8am walk
Campus is a twenty minute walk from my place, and for a long time I skipped sunscreen because everything I tried felt like a layer of paint. O'clearien Barriered Essence Sun Cream is an essence-type texture, so it spreads thin, feels hydrating, and doesn't leave a white cast.
It's lightweight and not sticky, which matters when you're putting on a hoodie right after. I put it on as the last step and do my neck too, since that's the bit that always gets forgotten.
A cleanser that doesn't squeak
Squeaky clean felt like clean to me for years. My chin disagreed. HEIMISH Matcha Biome Amino Acne Cleansing Foam is a mildly acidic, low pH foam that takes off oil and grime without leaving that stripped, tight feeling.
It's made with their patented Matcha Biome (probiotics and antioxidants) and it's 100% vegan. A small amount lathers more than you'd expect, so one tube goes a long way, which is the whole point of this post.
For the bumpy-texture weeks
When my skin starts feeling rough and my foundation clings to every dry patch, I reach for Beauty of Joseon Apricot Blossom Peeling Gel. It uses enzymes from apricot and apple instead of scratchy bits, and it helps clear excess sebum from pores.
There's green tea, apricot blossom and lotus in there too, so my face doesn't feel bare afterwards. Once or twice a week is plenty for me. More than that and I start pushing my luck.
Sunday night, one mask, no plans
Single sheet masks are the cheapest self-care I know. COSRX Pure Fit Cica Calming True Sheet Mask is the one I grab when my cheeks are red and annoyed. The essence is light and watery, sinks in fast, and doesn't leave me tacky when I take it off after 15 to 20 minutes.
It's dermatologically tested to be hypoallergenic, which is reassuring when your skin is already in a mood. I buy a few at a time so there's always one in my desk drawer.
Dry library air is real
Our library has the heating cranked from October onward and my face feels like paper by 3pm. Dr.WIK Deep Collagen Mist lives in my tote for exactly that. It's a fine spray with ultra-low molecular collagen and panthenol, and it takes the edge off that tight, dry feeling between classes.
Shake it first. The bottle is small enough that nobody notices you misting yourself in a study room.
The tint I've finished more than once
Okay, makeup. Peripera Ink Velvet is a velvet tint with proper pigment that stays put through a lunch break and a coffee. It has jojoba oil, hyaluronic acid and marine collagen in it, so my lips don't feel like cardboard by the end of the day.
I tap it into the center and press my lips together for a blurry gradient. 17 Rosy Nude is my school-day shade, and 21 Vitality Coral Red comes out on weekends.
Cheeks that don't look cakey
Colorgram Tintin Dory Cotton Blusher is a silky, lightweight powder that gives a sheer flush instead of a stripe of color. It doesn't cake, even over sunscreen, and you can layer it if you want more.
08 Peppy Mauve is the one my sister stole from me, so I bought 03 Tangerine Love for myself. Both are easy for beginners.
Lashes, done in thirty seconds
I do my mascara on the bus more often than I'd like to admit, so it has to be quick. Peripera Ink All Black Cara has a curved brush that grabs the little corner lashes and separates them without clumping, and the gel formula holds them in place all day.
There are two types. 01 Long Curling if you want length, 02 Volume Curling if you want fuller.
None of this needs to be bought in one go. Pick the sunscreen and cleanser first, add one fun thing next month, and keep the fancy cream for when you've got a real paycheck.
FAQ
A gentle cleanser and a sunscreen you'll actually wear every morning. Those two do more for your skin than any serum, and both come in well under $15 in K-beauty.
A lot of Korean brands price their everyday basics low because they expect you to repurchase them, so a budget cleanser or tint is often the same thing people buy at full routine level. Read the description and pick for your skin type instead of the price tag.
Go slow. Start once a week and see how your skin feels before adding a second night. Skip it on days your skin already feels irritated.
Many Korean tints are made to be tapped and blended, so a little on the cheeks can work. Use a tiny amount and blend fast, because tints set quickly.
