Is Your 'Korean' Skincare Still the Korean Formula?
Somewhere over the Pacific on a fourteen-hour flight, I read a thread of people swearing their favorite Korean sunscreen "wasn't the same anymore." Same name, same tube, different feel. By the time we landed I had a lot of notes.
Here's the gist. If you buy Korean skincare from the US, the product you get this year may not be the Korean formula. Some things sold to American shoppers are now reformulated for US rules. Below is why that happens, why sunscreen is where you'll notice it first, and how I shop now.
What actually changed this year?
Two things landed at once. Olive Young split off a separate US site, and US import rules tightened, including the de minimis changes that used to let small parcels from Korea come in cheaply. Shipping straight from Seoul got much harder for big retailers.
Meanwhile the US treats some cosmetic ingredients and UV filters differently from Korea. A formula sold in Seoul can't always be sold the same way in the US, so some products headed to American shoppers now come in US-compliant versions instead of the originals.
Why would the "same" product feel different?
Because skincare is a system. Swap a UV filter, a preservative or a fragrance to suit another market and the texture, the finish or the way your skin reacts can change. So someone can love the Korean version of a sunscreen for years and then feel let down by the US-channel version. That isn't in their head. It can be a different formula.
Sunscreen is the category where this matters most, because UV filters are exactly what the two countries regulate differently.
Which sunscreens am I reaching for now?
The one I packed for that flight was the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50+ PA++++. It's more serum than cream, airy and quick to absorb, with a luminous finish and no white cast.
There's hyaluronic acid for hydration and a Baby Green Complex of rice, oat, bean and sprout extracts. After a long-haul my skin feels like paper, and this was the first thing that felt comfortable going back on.
What about oily skin on a beach day?
The MINIC No-Sebum Blue Chamomile Hydro Sun Cream SPF50+ PA++++ technically comes from a men's grooming brand, which I ignored completely. It uses blue chamomile flower water, blue chamomile extract and azulene for soothing, plus ten types of hyaluronic acid.
It feels cool going on and helps keep excess oil down, so my face wasn't a shiny mess by mid-afternoon at the beach. Apply it after skincare to the face, neck and anywhere else the sun hits.
And if I want my SPF to do more?
The STANDARD SEOUL Collagen Firming Glow Sun Screen SPF50+ PA++++ is the overachiever. Next to the broad-spectrum protection it packs vegan collagen, PDRN, bakuchiol, retinal, glutathione and hyaluronic acid, aimed at firmness and a bit of glow.
It absorbs lightly without stickiness or white cast. It goes on as the last morning step, and I reapply through the day like you're supposed to (I'm getting better at that part).
So how do I make sure it's the real Korean formula?
Buy the Korea-market product, shipped from Korea. That's the simplest guarantee you're getting the original. Check where the order ships from, and watch for surprise customs bills, because direct from Korea usually means duties unless someone prepays them.
That's how Baerry works. Products come straight from Korean brands and authorized suppliers and ship from Seoul, so what arrives is the Korea-market formula, with duties and taxes prepaid (DDP) so there's nothing to pay at the door.
Korean skincare is only worth the hype if it's the actual Korean formula. If your SPF tube is running low, the bestsellers are a good place to start, same formulas people are buying in Seoul.
FAQ
They can be. US ingredient and import rules differ from Korea's, so some products sold to US shoppers are reformulated rather than the original Korea-market versions.
Buy the Korea-market product shipped directly from Korea. A Seoul-direct retailer sends the same product Korean shoppers use.
If you bought through a US channel it may be a reformulated version — a swapped filter or preservative can change texture, finish, or how your skin reacts.
Not with Baerry — duties and taxes are prepaid (DDP), so there's no unexpected charge on delivery.
Hyerin has always loved shopping—fashion, beauty, and pretty much anything worth adding to cart. Since starting Baerry, that habit has turned into testing dozens of new beauty products that land on the team’s desks in Seoul, plus plenty she buys herself. An ISTJ with a very high bar for what makes the cut, she treats her own face as the testing ground before recommending anything.
