Korean Body Lotions for Dry Winter Skin: The Ones I Actually Use Up
Every year it's the same thing. The heating goes on, and about a week later my shins start looking like a map and my jeans make them itch. I used to blame cheap lotion, but honestly I was also just putting it on wrong. So this year I actually paid attention to which Korean body lotions I finish and which ones sit half full in the bathroom.
Quick note before the list, because it made the biggest difference for me.
The damp skin thing is real
Put your lotion on right after the shower, while your skin is still a bit wet. I pat with the towel, don't rub, and do my legs before I even brush my teeth. If I wait until I'm dressed and the bathroom has cooled down, the same lotion does way less. Also, turning the water down from scalding helped more than I wanted to admit.
The one I'd buy first
If someone asked me for one bottle for the whole family, it'd be Dear, Klairs Supple Preparation All-Over Lotion. It has ceramide NP, hyaluronic acid and beta-glucan, plus shea butter and jojoba oil, but it doesn't feel heavy at all. It sinks in fast.
The part I like is that it's made for face and body, so on lazy nights I do my neck and face with the same pump. The 250ml tube lasts me a while too.
For the people who hate sticky lotion
My roommate refuses anything that makes her pajamas stick to her, and APLB Collagen EGF Peptide Body Lotion is the one she stole from me. It's fast absorbing and non-sticky, with collagen, EGF peptide and centella.
It's fragrance-free, which I appreciate in winter when my skin already feels irritated. Big 300ml pump bottle, so you can be generous with it.
When I want my legs to look a little shiny
sione Creramide Glowy Body Lotion has ceramide capsules and a rich, melting texture that still doesn't leave you sticky. What sold me is the finish. My skin looks healthy and a bit glowy instead of matte and chalky, which is nice when it's party season and you're wearing a dress with tights that inevitably get taken off.
The cactus one that feels like a cold drink
Not everyone's skin is desert dry. If yours is more normal but gets tight in winter, YADAH Cactus Body Lotion is a lighter option. It's over 69% prickly pear extract, light and non-greasy, and it's certified vegan.
I use this one in the morning and save the richer stuff for night.
If your arms feel bumpy, not just dry
Some of my roughness wasn't dryness at all, it was buildup. SOME BY MI AHA, BHA, PHA Miracle Calming Body Lotion is the one I use for that, since it helps with dead skin cells while still hydrating. It has a cooling, refreshing feel, so I like it after the gym.
Because it has acids, go slow. Start every other day for the first couple of weeks and don't layer it on top of another exfoliator.
My shins and elbows get this one
Lotion alone doesn't cut it for my shins in January. ATOPALM MLE Cream is a cream with their MLE barrier formula and Ceramide-9S, and it's made to be gentle enough for babies through adults, with a pH close to skin's own.
I don't use it all over, the jar is small for that. It's for the spots that crack: shins, elbows, the backs of my hands. It also works on the face if your cheeks are getting wind-burned.
For the really bad week
There's always one week where my skin is just angry and nothing feels comfortable. That's when I grab Mont Herb Ato Cream. It's an intensive moisturizing cream for very dry, sensitive skin, fragrance-free and free of common allergens, and it spreads easily without being sticky.
I put it on the dry areas of my face and body before bed. Pairing it with a humidifier in my room helped a lot too.
My routine now is pretty boring: shorter, cooler showers, a lotion all over while I'm still damp, and a thicker cream on the spots that crack. If you want to look around more, everything's in our body moisturizers collection.
FAQ
Right after a shower, while your skin is still a little damp. Pat yourself with a towel instead of rubbing dry, then put lotion on within a few minutes so it has some water to hold onto.
Lotion spreads faster and feels lighter, so it's easier to use every day. A thicker cream is better for the really dry spots like shins, elbows and knees. A lot of people use a lotion all over and a cream on the rough patches.
Ceramides are lipids that are naturally part of your skin barrier, the layer that keeps moisture in. Lotions with ceramides are meant to support that barrier, which is why they're popular for dry, tight winter skin.
Only if the product says so. Some, like Dear, Klairs Supple Preparation All-Over Lotion and ATOPALM MLE Cream, are made for both face and body. Others are body only, so check the description first.
