Skin Prep Before Makeup: The K-Beauty Steps That Make My Base Last All Day
My office heater runs from October to April, and every year my foundation starts doing the same thing: fine by 9am, flaky around my nose by 11, separated on my chin by lunch. I kept blaming the foundation and buying new ones. It was never the foundation.
What fixed it was paying attention to skin prep before makeup, the ten minutes of skincare that happen before anything with color touches my face. This is the order I do it in now, with the Korean products that ended up in each spot.
Start with a wash that doesn't leave you tight
If your face squeaks after cleansing, your foundation is going to find every dry spot later. I switched to Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Cleanser in the mornings. It's slightly acidic (pH 5.0 to 6.0) with birch extract and hyaluronic acid, and it takes off the overnight oil without that stripped feeling.
In the morning I just use a small amount with lukewarm water. No double cleanse, no scrubbing. Save that for the evening.
The pads I leave on while the kettle boils
This step surprised me the most. My cheeks get warm and a bit red after a hot shower, and warm skin makes base melt faster. Dr.G R.E.D Blemish Radish Cica Icying Pads are cooling toner pads with turnip leaf and cica, soaked in a lot of essence.
I tear one in half, put the pieces on my cheeks, and leave them for 3 to 5 minutes while I make coffee. Then I pat whatever essence is left into the rest of my face. My skin feels cooler and calmer, and foundation goes on smoother afterwards.
A mist, but the jelly kind
A few sprays here gives the next steps something damp to sink into. Biodance Caviar PDRN Jelly Serum Mist is a serum and a mist in one, with caviar and salmon PDRN, and it has a cooling hydrogel feel that I like after the pads.
It's 50ml, so it also lives in my work bag. A spray at my desk in the afternoon does more for dry patches than blotting does.
Keep the serum thin
On makeup days I skip anything oily or thick at this point. Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum has PDRN, collagen and 11 kinds of hyaluronic acid in a watery texture that absorbs fast and wears close to the skin, so nothing pills when I go in with a sponge later.
Anua also suggests mixing a drop or two into foundation for a glowier finish. I tried it with a matte foundation I didn't love anymore and it made it wearable again.
Where I was going wrong
For years my moisturizer was the same thick night cream I used before bed, morning and night. It felt great for about twenty minutes, then my foundation slid around on top of it. A rich cream sits on the surface, and base makeup separates on it. Now the heavy stuff is night only, and mornings get something lighter.
The lotion that disappears
Aestura Atobarrier 365 Lotion is the lighter thing. It's a fast-absorbing lotion with ceramide capsules for the moisture barrier, no greasy layer, and it's fragrance-free and non-comedogenic, which matters when it's going under makeup for nine hours. One pump covers my whole face.
SPF that already looks like makeup
Sunscreen is the last skincare step, and a slippery one can ruin everything on top. HEIMISH Artless Glow Base is an SPF50+ primer and sunscreen hybrid with a pearly tint and pearl extract, so it leaves a soft dewy finish instead of a white cast.
On weekends this is the only base I wear. On workdays it goes under everything else, and I give it a few minutes before the next step.
Primer only where I get shiny
My cheeks are dry and my nose is not, so one primer everywhere never worked. tfit Hydrate Vanish Art Primer is a watery cream with 8 hyaluronic acids plus Anti-Sebum P for oil, so it handles both. I put a thin layer all over after sunscreen and a little extra down the middle of my face.
That middle strip used to be where my foundation vanished first. It lasts noticeably longer now.
And one last spray
Technically this comes after makeup, not before, but it's the step that ties it all together. Clio Makeup Glow Fixer is a fine mist that sets base with a glowy finish. Shake it, hold it 20 to 30 cm away, and mist. My sister borrowed it for a long-haul flight and came back with her foundation still on, which I count as a pretty convincing test.
You don't need every step every day. If I'm short on time it's cleanser, pads, lotion and SPF base, and that alone stops most of the flaking. The rest of the primers and bases are in our face prep collection.
FAQ
It's the few skincare steps you do right before foundation: cleansing, hydrating, a light moisturizer, sunscreen and usually a primer. The goal is a smooth, hydrated surface so the base sits evenly instead of grabbing onto dry patches or pores.
Give your moisturizer and sunscreen a few minutes to settle. If your face still feels wet or slippery when you touch it, wait a little longer, otherwise foundation tends to slide and pill.
Usually not. A rich cream can sit on top of the skin and make foundation separate. A lightweight, fast-absorbing lotion is easier to wear under base, and you can save the thicker cream for night.
Not always. Some sunscreens and SPF bases already give a smooth, glowy finish. A primer helps most if you get oily in certain areas or your makeup tends to fade by the afternoon.
