Serum-Like, Tone-Up, Watery or Moisturizing? Picking a Korean Sunscreen by Texture

Serum-Like, Tone-Up, Watery or Moisturizing? Picking a Korean Sunscreen by Texture

We've written about sunscreen before, so this time we kept it to one question: which sunscreen is right for your skin? For the reel we lined up four Korean sunscreens on a grey table, squeezed a dot of each onto one arm and spread them with a butter knife, one at a time, so you could see the texture move.

Four tubes, four words: serum-like, tone-up, watery, moisturizing. The video is short, so here's the part we couldn't fit on screen.

Four tubes and a butter knife

We picked these four because they're all SPF50+ and still feel completely different on skin. That was the point. Sunscreen comparisons usually end up being about the numbers, and once the numbers are this close, texture is what decides whether you actually wear it every day.

The butter knife is there so each swatch gets spread the same way, which makes the difference in texture easier to see. The tube in the middle with the blue bottom is the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh, which comes up again below.

Serum-like: the one that barely feels like sunscreen

First swatch, first word: serum-like. The SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum spread out so thin under the knife that it almost disappeared, and it dries down luminous with no white cast.

There's a hyaluronic acid system in it for hydration, plus what SKIN1004 calls a Baby Green Complex of rice, oat, bean and sprout extracts. We'd hand this one to anyone who hates the feeling of sunscreen and to people who wear makeup over it, because there's nothing heavy underneath.

Tone-up: a little pink, on purpose

The second swatch is the only one with a visible tint in the tube. The Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Tone Up Sun Cream goes on as an essence-like cream and leaves a natural pink tone-up with a healthy glow, which is why it looked almost peachy next to the others.

Birch tree sap, purslane extract and allantoin are there to hydrate and calm skin after sun. It's reef-safe and has gone through skin irritation tests, so it's a good pick for sensitive skin that still wants to look a bit more awake.

Watery: fresh, quick, done

Number three got the word watery, and it earned it. The Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh: Rice + B5 uses rice seed water and panthenol, and the texture is lightweight and non-sticky, so it absorbs fast and leaves skin fresh and a little dewy.

It's the one we'd point oily or combination skin toward, or anyone reapplying in summer heat. No white cast either, which matters more the deeper your skin tone is.

Moisturizing: for the days your skin feels tight

The last swatch was the richest and the most beige. The ma:nyo Foundation-Free Sun Cream Moisture gives a natural tone-up and a clear, moist cover, so skin looks evened out without that thick, stuffy feeling.

This is the one for dry skin, and for mornings when you want to skip foundation altogether. The name is pretty honest about the plan.

So which one is yours?

The reel ends on all four tubes and "pick your favorite." If you want the quick version: hate feeling sunscreen at all, go serum-like with the SKIN1004 Water-Fit Sun Serum. Want a bit of brightness, go tone-up. Oily, go watery. Dry or skipping makeup, go moisturizing.

Whichever you pick, apply it as the last step of your skincare and don't forget your neck.

Texture is the thing that decides if a sunscreen gets used or sits in a drawer, so start there. You can see more SPF picks in our sunscreen collection.

FAQ
